d ancient buildings.A Parliamentary commission was appointed to inquireinto the abuses of the University, which, if we mayj udge from the plain-spoken narrative of Wood, wereconsiderable. It is fortunate for us that this good manspent most of these troubled years in Oxford, for hisnarrative is always beside us as an acrid and forciblecommentary on his day and generation. The Register of the Parliamentary Visitors of theUniversity from 1647 to 1658 gives us a clear account ofthe state of affairs in Brasenose. Naturally from itsnorthern connection and conservative traditions, it wasvehemently loyalist. In the May of 1648, two-thirdsof the College signified their willingness to be drivenout sooner than acknowledge the right of this visitation.Dr. Samuel RadclifF, the Principal, was deposed, and acertain Daniel Greenwood set up in his stead. Thencame troubles. The College would have none of theunhappy Mr. Greenwood, and, seeing that theirPrincipalship might be regarded as vacant, put up a
