BOWLEY Grand Combination Sale, Commencing April 10th, 1884, AT THE Bay District Race Track, AND CONTINUING SIX DAYS. rhoroughbrecl Horses ami Standard Trotters, Koads(crs, Jersey, Durham, and Devon Cattle, Spanish, Merino, and Leieestersliii-e Sheep, from all the prineinal breeding establishments on the 1'aeilieCoast. 750 HEAD OF STOCK Have already heen entered for sale and further instructions from lead- ing breeders are daily arriving. Breeders and owners desirous of entering stock for this sale should apply at once to HEXRY FROOMBERG, or S. C BOWLEY, 33. 35 and 3? New Montgomery St. The benefit of the combination sale to breeders and stockmen cannot be too highly estimated. Combination sales have been found of immense advantage in the Kast, and such a sale as this, comprising, as is antiei pated, not less than s.ikh.j head of hue stock from all the leading breeders of the Coast, cannot fail to attract :t large number of buyers from Hono lulu, Australasia and the East. The fame of California trotters is world- wide, and when it is known that for this sale already arc entered the get of Electioneer, The Moor. Almont. Nutwood and all the best known stal lions on the Coast, the advantages to both breeders and purchasers must be obvious. Large or small lots will be taken for sale. As soon as the catalogues can be prepared thev will be distributed all over the world: so it is necessary fur those desirous of t-iking advantage of (the sale to send in their lists of stock,, with complete pedigree, at an early date. S. C. ISOWLEY A CO. The Drought and the Silo. In many sections of the Connecticut valley it would seem that the grass roots were literally burned out by the sun's rays during the long spell of extreme dry weather. There are acres of mowing lands where not a green thing remains visible. We farmers still have faith that the much-needed rain will soon appear and eloth^ethe fields again with verdure. Oar naked pastures seem to have parted with every particle of life-preserving food at the demands of the half-famished animals within their boundaries. Even the growth of coarse sedge and rank vegetation, which occurs in the low spots of many pastures, ordinarily refused by cattle, is now greedily consumed, and forms a considerable portion of their suste- nance. In many sections springs and brooks have ceased to flow, and cattle in pasture are without water, except as sup- plied from other sources. gJ;Such of our farmers as have constructed silos and secured early supplies of ensilage are indeed fortunate this season. The corn fodder thus stored is certainly a valuable auxiliary feed, while the bulk of the corn fodder standing in the field is nearly or quite worthless. One farmer in this section, who planted about ten acres to a large variety of corn which he knew to be very productive, yet the grain of which would not ripen in this climate, built and filled his silo, and now has upwards of 100 tons first quality ensilage, and laughs at some of his less fortunate neighbors, who chaffed him during the summer about his "Confederate corn." He only wishes his silo, as well as his stock of ensilage, was larger. Among other convincing arguments this prolonged drought will in- duce many of our best farmers to construct siles and store en- silage next season. Several of our farmers, already owners of silos, have weighted the ensilage therein with bags, barrels and boxes of sand, which material they will use in the sta- bles for beddiug and for absorbents, as it is necessary to re- move it from the silos. Many of the bags thus used origi- nally contained commercial fertilizers of various kinds. Among our best and most practical farmers the interest in silos and ensilage is on the increase.—American Cultivator. Bay District Association. ANNOUNCEMENT! THE BAY DISTRICT ASSOCIATION will Rive a season of Rnnnin g Races, of special interest, and a season for Trotters, comiuencin e NOVEMBER M. B Particulars in future announcement. S. 'JT. SMITH, President. T. W. II IN< IIII \ V Secretary. TO BE RAFFLED. The Imported Greyhound Bitch, Tempete, The "Walton Club. On Tuesday October 23 the Walton Fishing Club will make another excursion around the bay. Steam and sail both will wait upon the Waltonians for this time they have en- gaged a tug as well as their yacht; to make assurance doubly sure in case there is no wind. John Muller is manager of the excursion as usual and his professional honor as a Waltonian caterer is pledged to make the trip a boundless source of pleasure and fun and never-ending happy reminiscences. The in- vitation list is all out, and even the bribe of the brightest jewel in Queen Vic's crown would not bribe the committee to issue another, for so great was the demand for places that all ft ere filled ere the ink was dry on the first man's name. Major McElhinny and Clem Dixon, together with Captain Williams are the comittee on games and recrea- tions. They have secured a number of medals and cups, and for fear that too much silverware should go to one man have barred our athletic editor out of all competitions, a fact which we proudly notice as it shows that our man is an athlete as well as an editor. An asphaltum kettle has been procured for the chowder and a lot of provisions contracted for in ad- vance, so as not to bull the food market. Saturday Evening-, Oct. 6, 1883, At No. £40 Minna Street. dSTTickets, one dollar each , can be procured at No. 4 Fourth street or 51X Fourth street. DIETZ' AXLE OIL. PATENT COMPOUND OIL. Every once in a while farmers are heard to camplain of the damage done to their grape vines and other crops by rabbits, and some had even taken the trouble to build a rabbit tight fence at great cost. This is an unnecessary expense. If farmers would keep a brace of greyhounds loose about their fields they will drive away every rabbit, and rabbits will not get over the scare and come back for months. The Bowie Stakes, four-mile heats, to bo run at the Balti- more Fall Meeting, has failed to fill. HUNTING DOGS.
