^there are two simple round-headed lights in each bay;the choir is arcaded all round internally, and forfrigidity of effect could not be surjDassed; the internalfittings comprise an immense pulpit, but, so far as Icould see, no apology for an altar. The exterior has two western steeples,^ and a noblenorth doorway, each jamb of which has three detachedshafts, standing considerably in advance of the wall, In a view of Zurich, published a.d. 1654, these steeples are shownwith octagonal spires rising ahove the gabled sides of the towers ; thebelfry stages and cupolas now existing must therefore be of a date subse-quent to the publication of this view.

2.—CLOISTER, ZURICH CATHEDRAL. Ohai. il ohukches. 21 which is entirely covered with diapers. The arch itselfis semicircular, and very simple in its moulding, but thissimplicity rather adds to than detracts from its generalgrandeur of effect. The whole is inserted in an addi-tional thickness of wall, set on, as it were, against theoriginal wall, and the extreme width of the doorwayitself is no less than eighteen feet nine inches. Thecloisters are remarkable, and very good of their kind;the arches rest on detached shafts, whose capitals areelaborately carved in a very peculiar manner, but veryeffectively. The whole design is unlike any NortherdE-omanesque, and bears much more similarity to thebest Lombard work. The choir has a square east end,with a crypt below it, but its aisles are apsidal, andround these, and indeed round most of the exterior,there are good arcaded corbel-tables under the eaves.(t will be seen that this is, therefore, a very fine churchof a very early type, and pec
