ept for occasional services, and left no pleasant impres-sions on our minds of our first Lombard cathedral; and yetundoubtedly there is both here and at Aachen—where theplan of the cathedral is so very similar—much to admirein the idea of the plan, and I can quite imagine that a verynoble and useful church might in any age have been foundedupon this old Lombard type.^ Those who know anything of Spanish churches will bereminded here of the two cathedrals at Salamanca, the relativepositions of which are just the same, a steep flight of stepsin either case, leading down from the south aisle of the newcathedral into the old and deserted one.
