Description |
English: British Empire flag A version of the White Ensign with the arms of South Africa, Australia, and Canada in the quarters and the Star of India in the centre. New Zealand is represented by four white stars on the red cross. The motto of Australia is 'ADVANCE AUSTRALIA' and of South Africa 'EX UNITATE VIRES'. The flag is made of cotton, the edges machine sewn with the design printed onto the fabric. It does not have a hoist. The flag dates from after 1921 when the arms of Canada were changed. This seems to be an unofficial design first produced in about 1911 and subsequently updated. |

Notes | British Empire (or Dominion) flags originated from the British Empire Exhibition 1924-1925. Held at Wembley, Middlesex, it was the largest exhibition in the world, attracting over 27 million visitors. Its official aim was to stimulate trade and strengthen economic and cultural ties across the Empire. It is likely that the flag was originally acquired as a souvenir of the event. |
