MIDDLE WOODPECKER. Class II. the two outmoft black , the upper parts a dirtywhite. The exterior feather marked on each webwith two black fpots; the next with two on theinner web, and only one on the other. The legsFemale, are of a lead color. The female wants that beauti-ful crimfon fpot on the head ; in other refpedts thecolors of both agree. This fpecies is much moreuncommon than the preceding •, and keeps altoge-ther in the woods. 86. THIS fpecies agrees with the preceding incolors and fize, excepting that the crownof the head in this is of a rich crimfon ; the crownof the head in the male of the former black ; andthe crimfon is in form of a bar on the hind part.
