Title |
Brooch (Langton). |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete Langton Down brooch, dating from the late Iron Age to early Roman period (15BC-60 AD). The short folded tubular wings enclose the axis bar and spring with seven turns intact. The pin and the back of the wings are missing. There is a curved moulding at the junction of the wings and bow. The upper bow is worn, but reeded longitudinal mouldings are visible. The spring case has traces of two bands of incised oblique lines at the centre and extending from the moulding. Much of the patina is missing on the spring case and so it is impossible to say how extensive this decoration is. The straight bow tapers slightly. The lower bow, foot and catchplate are missing. In total, c. 50% of the bow is intact. The brooch is 24.1mm in length with a width across the wings of 22.68mm and it weighs 7.8g. The bow and wings have a grey patina, but the spring is red/brown. |
