urch andpointed out Bishop Petit jeans tomb in the chancel. I hadexplained to him the object of my visit, and he showed methe beads of a rosary, said to have come from this early time, that hung from the neck of the Virgin in the church, andwere the only such objects they possessed. He had made adiligent search for such relics as might have been kept hiddenaway in Christian families, but without avail. There weretwo small framed pictures, one of the Virgin and the otherof the Holy Family, printed in Nagasaki in 1597, in the ves-tibule of the church. They had been sent to Rome at thetime of the last Papal Jubilee as a gift, but the Holy Fatherreturned them, inscribed as I then saw them in his own hand.Poverty and distress were the portions both of the priestsand laity of the Church at Nagasaki, and amid them I couldsee Father Sahnon dwelt ever helpful, courageous, andcheerful. AVhen we parted he said: Though not of our faith, you may not be unwilling to receive an old mans blessing. 1-tT

CHRISTIAN RELIC FROM JAPAN.FLEMISH CARVING, THE ENTOMBMENT.MUSEUM COLLECTION. Ever since I have thought of Xagasaki as a friendly place, iind such it will remain to me. While my own efforts were unavailing, I did not neg-lect to employ those aids which I have found so useful: thedealers in curios and second-hand furnishings, whom I en-listed everywhere, in my search for Christian things. Wordhad gone round, and the brokers who travel from shop toshop in the big cities and make long excursions about thecountry were especially active; an institution in Japan, theyborrow their wares and sell them as their own on such termsof profit as they can make with their customers. In this wayI acquired from one of the most industrious and faithful ofmy scouts an edict board dated the fourth year of Keiwo,1868. Such boards are not particularly rare, l)ut it was, atleast, a beginning. Kyoto seemed the most promising place and there I set-tled at the Kyoto Hotel, constantly aided by my friend, Mr.Yuasa
