o from Somerset and a few from Worcester. On the 26tb they had reached the eastern counties, as theywere reported from Suffolk and Norfolk, and there was adecided increase in the latter county on the 27th. On thesame day they had also reached Glamorgan and Merioneth,and were recorded from Cheshire and Yorkshire on the 28th. During the first week ia May small parties had evidentlyarrived, as increased numbers were reported from most of thesouthern counties. Thejirst large immigration reached our shores on Mavthe6th, and was reported from the Cornish, Hants and Kentlights ; probably a portion of the birds passed on, as somewere reported from the Norfolk lights. This large wave spread across England and Wales, fromKent in the south-east to Cardigan and Cumberland on thewest and north-west. The birds in the southern countiesmust have passed quickly northwards, as a decrease wasnoted in Wilts and Kent on May the 7th. A second immigration reached the Cornish lights on the 102 SEDGE-WARBLER.

103 7tli and the Hants lights on tlie 8th, and ))ifds were ohservodarriving at our southern lights almost nightly from that dateuntil May the 22nd (see Chronological Summary). The south-western lights were reached slightly before thesouth-eastern ones, and the birds then passed rapidly north-wards, spreading over the country as they went. The residents had settled down and were nesting in Derby-shire by the 20th, and in Surrey by the 21st, but fresh arrivalswere still passing through both of these counties on the abovedates. With the exception of an increase noticed on Maythe 25th in Wilts and Glamorgan and on May the 26th inCornwall, no further movements were observed. The species was reported as passing our south-coast lightson no less than twelve different nights between May the Gthand the 22nd. Chronological Summary of the Records. April 2. Norfolk.„ 9.
