The unpardonable affront totruth and justice thus exemplified makes my blood boil, especially when,searching for a motive, I find none except the fact that he was a Southerner,and in the War between the States he pinned his faith to the land of hisfathers, following, like Lee, the dictates of his conscience rather than theallurements of reward and honor. His life throughout was so steady, hisheart was so pure that the only crime—God save the mark—he ever com-mitted during his career was his allegiance with the incomparable Lee in thejust cause that was lost.
