Burpee's Seed Warehouse, owned and exclusiyely occupied by us, is located at Nos. 475 and 477 North Fifth Street, extending through to Nos. 476 and 478 York Avenue, and for the conducting of an extensive mail seed business is pronounced, by all who have examined the various departments, to be the most admirably arranged in this country. It occupies four building lots; is five stories high, besides basement, and has a wide front- age on both Fifth Street and York Avenue—both broad streets—thus giving ample light. We also have large warerooms for the storage of seeds in two other warehouses in Philadelphia and extensive buildings on Fordhook Farm. That our new customers at a distance may appreciate our facilities for the prompt and careful execution of orders we give illustrations of some of the departments. THE BUSINESS OFFICE, of which the ii- ————^———— lustration only gives a partial view, is located on the first floor, entrance from Fifth St. Here the orders received are recorded in large books, of which there is a sep- arate book for every State in the Union. Here, also, most of the correspondence is conducted.

FLOWEI^SEED DEPARTMENT-i shown above, is devoted entirely to the filling of orders for seeds to be sent, postpaid, by mail. The seeds are already done up, by the million of packages, in packets, ounces, quarter pounds, pounds, pints, and quarts, and can readily be selected on order, from the thou- sands of compartments, drawers, and bins, all dis- tinctly labeled arfd numbered- After the ordei-s are filled, they are carefully examined by expert em- ployees whose entire time is devoted to this work, to see that no mistake has occurred ; they are then wrapped, tied, and passed to the stamping table, where they are stamped, and sacked. OPENING THE MAIL. The mail oflice is the ————— scene of quiet but busy work, the entire time of from five to eight persons being required to open and assort the mail; by continued practice they have become very expert, as may be iudged from the fact that in the busy season ovr mail numbers from three thousand to over five thousand letters and postal cards a dau.
