In the EuEAL Xew Yoekee of September 26tli, 1891, appeared an interesting article on the Collie Dog, Avith illustrations of Bard of Fordhook and Fordhook Pansy. The editor previously wrote to us asking for the names and addresses of a few parties who had purchased Collies from our Keunels. Not knowing exactly his purpose we selected from our books several names of those who had purchased from us. It seems he then wrote to the parties, asking for their honest opinion of the Collie Dog. Below we give two of the letters published :— " I have been using Collie Dogs on my farm for tlie past forty years, and at present have two. When properly trained, I consider them the best dog for all purposes. They are particularly good for driving cattle, sheep, etc. Their excellence in this line seems to be bred in them. They are good watch dogs, as they are always on the alert. They are brave and will attack a tramp or thief. They are perfectly safe to leave with children or young animals, and'are easily taught. I consider them better farm dogs than those of any other breed. Of course, they need training to learn what their duty is. I use mine for driving the cows to and from the fields and could hardly get along without them. They t*ake the cattle as quietly as a person." Levi N. Shelly, Dillingersville, Pa. "I do not think I can speak too highly of the Collie for use upon the farm, if properly trained. I consider dogs of this breed particulai-ly good for driving stock. I cannot recommend mine as a good watch dog. He has not been trained to attack any one and is too friendly with all. He is a safe playfellow with children and does not worry young animals. Collies are easily taught if properly handled, and this should be done by one person only. I do no't think any farm where live stock are kept is thoroughly equipped without one. Mine is indispensable in leading cows to and from the pasture, and though not able to' open and close gates, he will never leave his post until some one goes to close the gate. He is also very useful in carrying messages to and from the house to men at work upon the farm, taking their lunches to the men, and, in fact, doing general errands, and by his many tricks he affords amusement to all." Elmer Duell, Woodstown, N. J. Mr. J, M. Clark, Burlington, Vt., Feb. 11th, 1891, writes:—Collie Pup registered 17,594 is very fine and the pet and pride of the whole place. I wish you could see him. He looks very much like Fordhook Squire in the Catalogue, and probably is a bit finer dog ; anyway, we are satisfied, and I have not found anything in the city that can touch him in pedigree. Mr. G. H. Jones, Catskill, N. Y., Jan. 27th, 1891, writes:—In March, 1889, you sent to me the two registered Collie Puppies, "Fordhook Donald" and " Fordhook Lassie." They are magnificent specimens of the breed. Donald has remarkable sagacity and in- telligence. He appears to think that he is responsible for the welfare of the children, all the stock and animals, and, in fact, he assumes a general supervision over the af- fairs of the household, stable, and grounds. His wise judgment of what is right and what is wrong is something Tery remarkable. As to what others who know him think of him, it is sufficient to say that by one of those I have been offered SoO for him. He is not for sale. Lassie is more retiring and quiet in her disposition and takes special interest in attending to her duties at I the stable. I think she is almost as intelligent as Donald. ' 8he has had a litter of pup))ies. pronounced by judges to be as fine, if not superior in jjoiuts. I cannot say too much in praise of the Collies bred by you. . Mr. "Wilmer Atkinson, Editor and Proprietor of the Farm Journal, Phila., Pa.. May 20th, 1891. writes:— ! Master " Rob Roy " arrived duly, and the universal ver- I diet is that he is a very handsome pup. He doesn't talk j very much yet, but I found he could talk, for I opened the door on his' toe or tail and he yelled vigorously. The dog belongs to my daughter Elizabeth, and she overflows with thanks to the donors. I hope he will turn out well. I There will be no lack of effort on the part of his mistress I to make a scholar of him.
