BURPEE'S NOVELTIES FOR 1895. 17
Text Appearing After Image:
Of the many New Vegetables first introduced into cultivation by us as enumerated on page 36, seldom, if ever, has any variety awakened such an extraordinary demand so quicklv. Although onlv first introduced in 1890, BURPEE'S SADDLE=BACK seems already to have become recog- nized everywhere as the best Wax Bean in cultivation to=day. While productive and profitable to grow for market, the SADDLE=BACK, unlike many recent "novelties," is of the most superb quality, surpassing all other Wax Beans in the rich flavor of its stringless, saddle-back pods. It originated in Genesee County, N. Y., with Messrs. N. B. Keexey & Son, who are the largest growers of Beans in the world. Among the scores of new cross-bred Beans which we have carefully examined on their farms, we singled out this distinct variety as the most valuable of all Wax Beans. It is a cross between the Yosemite Mammoth or Monster Wax and the Black-Eyed Wax, and inherits quality from both parents. Again this year we contracted for the originators' entire crops, and consequently the genuine headquarters seed can only be had from us. 3fessrs. Keeney & Son have never sold a pint of these beans to any other seedsmen. BURPEE'S SADDLE-BACK WAX, exclusively owned and controlled by us, marks the greatest improvement yet obtained in Wax Beans. In combining handsome appearance for market and rare quality for table use it is unapproached by any other variety in cultivation. Descriptive of the Saddle-Back we can hardly do better than quote the following from a letter written by the originators :— "The pod is large, long, straight, round, very full oj meat, and is absolutely stringless. The growth of the bush vigorous, the foliage being sufficiently profuse to cover tne ground in such a manner as to shade it and keep it moist, hence this variety is not likely to suffer severe!)7, as do many other varieties, in a dry season. It is a very profuse bearer, the plants in ordinary field culture usually bearing from 25 to 40 pods each When the pods are broken between the beans there is no open space,—the. pods being filled with meat, and can be sliced a cucumber without showing any hollow space." The Saddle=back character of the pods (as accurately shown in the engraving herewith) together with the superb quality, when placed on market, will eventually almost drive the flatter-pod beans out of cultivation. It has been tested by thousands of progressive garden ers, from whom we have received expressions of the ntost enthusiastic praise, with which we could fill many pages, aU going to prove that BURPEE'S SADDLE=BACK is un equaled in quality, with handsome, fleshy pods as thick as they are wide and always absolutely stringless. Per packet 15 cts.; 2 pkts. for 25 cts.; per pint 40 cts.; per quart 75 cts.; by mail, postpaid. By freight or express: per pint 30 cts.; quart 60 cts.; 2 quarts for $1.00; 4 quarts for $1.75; per peck (sealed) $3.50.
