The officials ofthe Museum claimed the right to examine every objectintended for exportation, and to give this claim effectthey opened every case submitted for sealing. In theprocess of breaking cases open they often split the woodso badly that new cases had to be provided, of course atthe expense of the exporter. They also claimed the rightto seize without payment any object, the acquisition ofwhich they considered desirable for the National Collec-tion. Many visitors to Egypt purchased valuable objectsand submitted them for examination in order to obtainpermission to take them out of Egypt, and then weredeprived of their possessions under this claim ; and whenthey asked the officials to pay them at least what theythemselves had paid for the things they were told toapply to the dealers who had sold them to them.
