Plums The plum like the pear and other finer fruits, succeeds best in heavy soilwith some clay, and being- almost entirely free from disease, they can be grownvery profitably. Of late years the demand has been growing very rapidly. Thefiner kinds are excellent dessert fruits of rich and luscious flavor; for cooking and canning theyare unsurpassed. For home consumption they should be allowed to remain on the trees untilfully ripe, but for shipping they should be gathered a few days earlier. Some of the varietiesare inclined to overbear and should be thinned in order to produce perfect fruit. Most allthe varieties, especially the native sorts, are extremely hardy and will withstand the mostsevere weather. European Plums Yellow Bradshaw.
