Description
English:
Cabaret program cover for Balieff's Chauve-Souris of Moscow, ca.1923
This is a cover to a cabaret program from ca.1923. This cabaret was a group of Russian performers gathered by impresario Nikita Baliev and called the "Chauve-Souris" (French for "bat"). In the early 1920s they toured America under the direction of F. Ray Comstock and Morris Gest. The artwork for this program was by Sergei Yurievich Sudeikin (1882–1946) – a notable Russian artist working in theatre design. Although Sudeikin started his career as a painter, he attained his prominence in theater design particularly collaborating on the creation of the cabaret interiors as well as theatre costumes and settings.
