volumes, together with upwards of17,000 unbound pamphlets. It is provided, as far as the incomepermits, with the standard and current literature of all sub-jects taught in the University. In the departments of thenatural and physical sciences it includes the principal jour-nals and transactions of societies. In the departments oflanguage and literature, the works of all authors of primaryor secondary importance from the origins of each literatureto the present time are available, as well as the principalphilological and literary periodicals. Corresponding facilitiesare provided in the departments of philosophy, history andpolitical science. The library is a circulating one for membersof the Faculty, and a library of reference for students. Thelatter, however, are allowed under certain conditions the useof books at home outside of library hours, and students en-gaged in special work, requiring the consultation of books ofreference, are allowed access to the stack room by the librarian

Theserooms are used for the instruction of advanced students, whomay at the discretion of their professors use the rooms andthe books contained in them for private study. The conversa-tion rooms, situated in the basement, are intended for the useof students who wish to withdraw for the purpose of discus-sion or combined study, to avoid disturbance of the readingroom proper, where absolute quiet must be observed. Be-sides the general library, there is also a special collection ofperiodicals and monographs situated in the Biological Build-ing, and another in connection with the Psychological Labora-tory for the use of students and staff engaged in practicalwork.
