English: Brig. Gen. Thomas Weidley, commanding general of Marine Corps Installations – East, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, awards Sgt. Shawn Porter with the Naval Achievement Medal during an award ceremony where Porter was named the Weapons Training Battalion Coach of the Year at Stone Bay on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Dec. 17. “This is recognition of my accomplishments through the assistance of those who have supported me from my wife to my fellow Marines,” said Porter, a coach with 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment. “Coaches help further the Marine Corps in its aspects and goals of being the best. When it comes to coaching, it’s not the same as an actual combat situation, but this will help teach you the fundamentals you will need succeed as a Marine.” Throughout the ceremony, leaders reminded coaches and trainers of their importance within their units and the Marine Air Ground Task Force. “Every Marine is a rifleman,” said Sgt. Maj. Paul Berry, sergeant major of MCI – East Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “Marines pride themselves on their marksmanship and the discipline. This goes back to Belleau Wood and our colonial roots, every Marine is a sharpshooter and every Marine has that discipline. These coaches and instructors take great pride and they love to train Marines and pass on that knowledge to the next generation.”
