ngineer An Engineering Weelily RAILLESS TROLLEY CARS. The tailless trolley system which of late has under^^onesevere development, forms a -link in modes of transporta-tion between the automobile and the familiar central powerdriven street car, in use throughout many cities and districtson the North American continent. The railless system of street transportation has manyadvantages over the pre-existing- type, among which mightbe mentioned the disposal of track expenses and the dimin-ished possibility of a block on the right of way. The many municipalities throughout Great Britain haveprobably done more to encourage the development of thissystem of transportation than any foreign comimunities. Infact, the municipalities of Leeds and Bradford lay claim tobeing the possessors of the first commercial railless lines inthe United Kingdom. A description of these lines has beengiven by the Tramway and Railway World, and with theirpermission we publish the photographs accompanying thisarticle.

The corpoTation of Leeds a few years ago gave seriousattention to this system of transportation, owing to a districtsituate to the southwest of the municipality which was inneed of transportation facilities, but too sparsely populatedto make a regular tramway system remunerative. A thoroug:hinvestigation of railless trolleys was made by the TramwaysCommittee and a report was made. The investigation in-cluded a visit to Austria, Northern Italy and Germany. Shortly after the issuing of the report the corporationapplied for powers in the session of igoQ-io to equip theroute for railless traction. A consideration of this system will show that the mainpoints of departure from the ordinary tramway system arethe tires, the methods of trolley contact, and the method oftrolley wire support.
