Owing, however, to a disagree-ment among the trustees, the idea of a provincial universitywas abandoned; but application was made at once for aRoyal Charter for the independent establishment of McGillCoUeg-e, along- the lines laid down in the bequest. The char-ter was granted in 1821, and the Royal Institution for the faculties (Law in 1853, Applied Science in 1878, and Agri-culture in 1907), and the erection of new and modern build-ings in which to properly carry on the work of instruction;so that to-day, with fourteen buildings, without countingthose of the Agricultural College at Ste. Anne de BeUevueor the affiliated Theological and other schools, brings theUniversity to the dawn of an era of maturity. Molson Hall, or The Arts Building. Advancement of Learning, a body which was incorporated in1802 to encourage universal education in the province ofQuebec, proposed to take possession of the estate. Owingto protracted litigation, this was not surrendered to themuntil 1829, when the work of teaching was begun in twofaculties. Arts and Medicine. The record of the first thirtyyears of the Universitys existence is an unbroken tale offinancial embarrassment and administrative difficulties, and,with the exception of the Medical Faculty, became almostextinct as a body. In 1852 a revised and less wieldy charterwas secured, and in 1855 a new era of progress and prosper-ity opened. This second period of the Universitys history, that isfrom 185s to the present day, may properly be called theformative period, as it has been marked by a very rapidgrowth both in aims and teachings of the institution, an ex-pansion in all branches of learning, the establishment of new Royal Victoria College 1899 Str
