79 and 1889 it had advancedfrom a city of .34,208 people to a popula-tion of 44,489, and the twenty-four yearithat followed were necessary to doublethe population. From that time on, how-ever, the increase has been phenomenal,till to-day Hamiltons population standsat 110,137, which does not include the15,000 soldiers that she has sent to thefront. Even more remarkable has been the growth in assessable property. In1879 this totalled $15,168,280, while to-day the property is assessed at $88,267,-195. It is generally conceded that bankclearings and customs returns give afairly accurate indication of businessconditions. If this is so, Hamilton iscertainly in a thriving condition. In 1914the bank clearings totalled $148,8.34,586,and in 1918 they stood at $262,476,476.The customs returns for the port ofHamilton in 1914 were given at $2,274,-690.40, while in 1918 they had reached$6,758,349.75. Are Not Neglected Notwithstanding the progress thathey have been making industrially.Hamilton citizens have not in any wayneglected the things that make lifeworth while, in the shape of nicely laidout streets, nice comfortable residences,parks and similar features. From abeauty standpoint Hamilton is somewhatfavorably located on the Hamilton Bay.and has one of the best land-locked har-bors on Lake Ontario. The city is some-what extended, covering an area of al-most 8,000 acres.
