The most fertile soil is in the north, and asthere is abundant moisture and the temperature is moderate at allseasons, the wheat crops of this region have put France next toRussia in the production of wheat among the countries of Europe (Fig. 185). As the greater part of the surface of France is arable, the rain-fall adequate and well distributed, the temperatures high, andabove all the peasants skilful, hardworking, and thrifty, agri-culture is the chief industr)^ of the country. Indeed, over one-half of the whole population is engaged in farming. Rye is grownin the highlands in the south east and oats in the same region aswheat (Figs. 185 and 197).
