Cannister, spice |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Object type | Classification: NM3.4456 | |||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
English: Cannister, spice, bulbous body, flared foot, two girdles, domed cover has two ribs, pewter additional comments- description- “Spice pot.” makers comment- “Although called 'spice pots' by collectors, contemporary descriptions of pewter wares never use this term, and we don't really know what these containers were for. They are never inscribed with the name of the intended contents, and very few bear a maker's mark. We believe they date from c1690-1750. This baluster-shaped body, with a slip-on ratyher than a screw-on lid, is one of the less common (and probably earlier) styles - say c1700.” Peter Hayward, Database Manager, Pewter Society, England, 28 February 2008 |
