Description
English: This photograph shows how well-engineered some of the German trenches were. The caption notes that there was10 feet of concrete on top and the image shows a great depth of concrete and sod below the corrugated iron roof. Drain pipes and even porches can be seen in the dugout.

Although this is a Headquarters and therefore better built than ordinary trenches, there was a perception, particularly at the beginning of the war, that the German trenches were often better constructed than those of the Allies.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. A German General's Headquarters' dug-out being used by the British. The concrete on the tops is 10 feet deep.']
