Wherever groups of Europeans, ofwhatever nationality, were gathered,the cheering as the carriage passedwas loud and enthusiastic. So, amidthe thunder of the British artillery,which Arabi would hear in his prison,and between lines of British bayonets,the Khedive passed out of sight,through the gates of his palace. Even at the stations where thetrain did not stop, the population wascollected on the platform and along theline to acclaim the Khedives passage.His Highness has bestowed the GrandGordon of the Osmanieh on Sir GarnetWolseley. I hear upon good autho-rity that the Khedive will shortly issuea general amnesty to all concerned inrecent events, excepting only abouthalf a dozen individuals, who will betried for their lives on the charge ofbeing implicated in one or other of themassacres and the conflagration ofAlexandria. This step is likely tohave an excellent effect. The Grand Cordon of the Osmaniehwas also bestowed upon Sir EvelynWood on his arrival with his brigadein Cairo.
