It is the Stoney patenttipping crane, built by Ransomes &Rapier for handling spoil from adredger, small coal, or other similarduty. The principal feature here is theperfect control that is exercised over thetipping action, the amount of which canbe regulated to a nicety from the en-gines. The advantage of this is thatthe water dredged up with the spoil canbe emptied out before the gravel, sandor mud is tipped into the trucks. Inthe case of coal, the advantage is thatthe steadiness of movement lessens theliability of the coal to break up, whichoccurs when it is thrown down from anordinary skip.
