It is the inten-tion to handle all the traffic within thisdistrict electrically, the through pas-senger trains, ranging up to 875 tons inweight, to be hauled at maximumspeeds of 60 to 65 miles an hour. Inthe design of the electric locomotive inquestion the best mechanical features ofthe high-speed steam loocomotive weresecured, combined with the enormouspower and simplicity in control madepossible by the use of the electric drive, and the success of the trials thus far hasled to the opinion that in the new loco-motive a type has been found whosedistinctive features may be accepted asa basis for future standardisation. The locomotive has four drivingaxles, on each of which is rigidlymounted, without intermediate gearing, the armature of an electric motor of anormal rating of 550 H. P. Thus thetotal rated capacity of the locomotive is2200 H. P., although for short periodsa considerably greater power may be

ONE OF THE 95-TON ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES BEING BUILT TO SUPPLANT STEAM LOCOMOTIVESON TWO DIVISIONS OF THE NEW YORK CENTRAL RAILROAD i66 CASSIERS MAGAZINE developed, making it more powerfulthan the largest steam locomotive inexistence. The motor has two poleswith flat faces, so as to permit a largerelative vertical movement betweenarmature and poles as the latter moveup and down with the riding of the frameupon the springs. By the use of theSprague-General Electric multiple-unitsystem of control, two or more locomo-tives may be coupled together and oper-ated from the leading cab as a singleunit. The motive power may, there-fore, be easily adapted to weight oftrain, with no complication in operationand with uniform make-up of train crew.A single electric locomotive will be ableto maintain the schedule with a 450-tontrain, and two locomotives will becoupled together for heavier trains. The locomotive superstructure consistsof a central cab for the operator, con-taining master controllers, e
