Title
Cast lead alloy pilgrim ampulla of Medieval, thirteenth or fourteenth century date. Drawing: Frank Basford.
Description
English: Incomplete cast lead alloy pilgrim ampulla of Medieval, thirteenth or fourteenth century date. Length 47mm, width 30mm.

Viewing the ampulla in plan, it has a circular body with a neck that flares gently outwards towards the rim which is uneven and has been “crimped” in order to contain holy water. Viewed from the obverse side, the right hand suspension loop is incomplete and the broken part is missing. The left hand suspension loop is complete but mis-shapen. Decoration on the body of the obverse side is in the form of a symmetrically-shaped flower with four large pointed petals and four slightly smaller pointed petals in the interstices. None of the petals have mid-ribs. The body of the reverse is decorated with a crown. The crown has a central fleur de lys with a fleur at each side and contains hatch-work within the design. Below the crown is a capital T in Lombardic style. probably to signify St Thomas of Canterbury.
