aduate Division, a charter member of theGateway Athletic Conference, participates in eleven varsity sports-football, basketball, baseball, cross-country, track, wrestling, swim-ming, soccer, gymnastics, tennis, and golf. In accordance with aspecial ruling, freshmen in good standing are allowed to participatein varsity sports. A special feature is the extensive intramural program, in whichstudents can elect to take part in wrestling, badminton, table-tennis,volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, handball, weight-lifting, tennis,archery, bowling, swimming, and Softball. The intramural and inter-collegiate programs are under the supervision of an Athletic Com-mittee of student and faculty representatives. Both programs are fi-nanced through funds from student activities fees. The Chicago Under-graduate Division Gymnasium, adjacent to the entrance of the mainbuilding, is the center of the intramural and physical education pro-grams. The fighting Chi-Illini.73 also held in the gymnasium which has floor space for eight full-sizebasketball courts. A staff of eighteen coaches directs the Chicago Undergraduate Divi-sion athletic activities. Varsity letter awards are made to athletes- whomeet the participation requirements of intercollegiate competition, tosophomore managers, and to sophomore cheerleaders. HONORS Students who achieve a grade average of 4.5 during the freshmanyear may be eligible for membership in one of the national scholastichonor fraternities. Women who earn an average of 4.5 in 15 hours ofacademic work during their first semester, or an average of 4.5 in 30hours during their first year, may be initiated into Alpha LambdaDelta.
