Costa Rica 64570. Dam of Merry Maiden, 18 lbs. 4-5 oz.; Chirp, 19 lbs. 8 oz. Dropped Jan. 20, 1885. Costa Rica has attained a great notoriety as the damof Merry Maiden, winner of Sweepstakes Award for best individual cow in anyherd competing, Worlds Fair Dairy Tests, Chicago, 1893, but a glance at herpicture will show that her claim to greatness does not rest alone upon herbeing the dam of Merry Maiden, but that she herself has all the characteristicsof a great cow and progenitor of such. She is a daughter of Upright 6147,sire of 11 cows in the 14 lb. list out of 14 registered daughters. Upright is agrandson of Lord Lawrence and of Boma, a daughter of Marius 1760: so thatUpright comes naturally by his great power of butter transmission. Modita isthe dam of Costa Rica. The former has a test of 15 lbs. 8 oz., and besides beingthe dam of Costa Rica is dam of Mercurina, 17 lbs. 10 1-2 oz., and Daretta. 16lbs. 8 oz. Modita is a granddaughter of One Ton, who is also the grandsirc ofUpright,
