Tested Novelties offered by Reading" Nursery. HARDY PERENNIALS. The Hardy Flower Department of our regular catalogue has been carefully brought up to date and already contains a great many distinct novelties not offered by any other American firm of Nursery- men. Below we add a few Novelties not included in the body of catalogue and which can be highly recommended: Anemone Japonica var. "Whirlwind." A charming variety of American origin which we take pleasure in offering. This plant is of even more vigorous growth than its parent, with handsomer, broader, and thicker foli- age, giving promise of a more hardy constitution, which is a point of vast importance, as in the vicinity of Boston except in Avell-drained soils the parent often gives trouble by partial winter- killing. Besides this greater hardihood the plant is very distinct in the flowers, which are of the purest white and semi- double, borne in immense profusion from late August until hard frost. Each flower on a stiff, clean stem, ad- mirable for cutting purposes. Our illustration is a very faithful repre- sentation of this valuable acquisition. 25 cents. Anemone Japonica var. Lady Ardilaune (Lady Ardilaune's Japanese Anemone.) A fine English-raised va- riety of purest white with a double row of petals which are of great substance, and overlap each other almost to their points. A fine addition. 50 cents each. New Hardy Carnation "Em- peror." One of the finest additions to our hardy flowers. A pink of perfect hardihood forming broad clumps of silvery foliage and producing a pro- fusion of rich crimson, beautifully fringed,'very double flowers exquisitely clover-scented. A constant bloomer. 25 cents. New Hardy Carnation " Her Majesty." Another choice and per- fectly hardy carnation of greatest value for cutting purposes. Flowers large, of purest white, very double, fringed, and richly clover-scented. A constant bloomer until frost. 35 cents. Hieracium villosum. Another fine addition to the hardy flowers. A plant of neat, compact habit, with oval, Avhite, downy foliage and large, double, yellow flowers on stems a foot long. Per- fectly hardy and of easiest culture. 25 cents. Epilobium angustifolium var. album. (White Great Willow Herb.) This we saw in great perfection in London, England, last year, and can highly recommend the plant for ornamental and cut-flower purposes. The plant makes a well-branched bush, and produces a profusion of long, showy spikes of purest white flowers. A choice plant. 35 cents. Iris Kaempferii var. Speckled Beauty. Single. White ground, minutely speckled with magenta and copper-red; base of petals feathered with yellow; centre petals white, speckled with copper-red. 35 cents. Iris Kaempferii var. Conqueror. Double. Deep carmine pink with band of white through centre of each petal; reverse of petals light pink: large veins of white through the entire flower. 35 cents.
