Text Appearing Before Image:
few surviving portraits, especialh those of women, have an originality and attractiveness which distinguish them. The Portrait of a Lady is that of a princess, perhaps of thefamily of the Gonzaga, the Medici, or of Henry I\^ of France, and exemplihes admirably the characteristics mentioned. Ithas a joy in detail, astonishingly rendered, and a delightfulsuggestion of quiet but instantaneous life that carries us backto Clouet and the French primitives. The imposing costume of the period, the red brocade witha huge triple ruff of lace, jewels in the hair and ears, the greatpendant and chain of pearls have all been painted faithfully. The little dog looks out at us w4th lively curiosity and theassured impudence of a court favorite. The painting of theflesh tones is very delicately managed to give proper model-ling with the least possible effect of shadow, and the ros\ toneis far from the florid hues which Pourbuss contemporarieswould have imparted. Text Appearing After Image:
MADONNA AND CHILD WITH ANGELSMASTER OF FRANKFORT 50 MASTER OF FRANKFORT German, Sixteenth Centur\-MADONNA AND CHILD W Illl ANCH-.LS A number of pictures of a certain t)pe in Frankfort have beenassigned to the Master of Frankfort, for Lick of a more definiteattribution. Who this artist was has been a much debatedquestion. Some identify liim \\lth Konrad F\-ol, a citi/xn ofFrankfort, but others claim this as chronologically impossibleand prefer to regard him as Konrads son, Fians Fyol. Thisis not an impossibility, but the figures seem too awkwardl)placed in the landscape, and hardly flexible enough to be identi-fied with Flemish art. This picture has attributes of the artof the Middle Rhine and the characteristics associated with theworks attributed to the Master of Frankfort. Among its best qualities are the colour and detail. Thered robe of the Madonna is rich and not so heav) or manneristicas in many German pictures of a similar character. In the fore-ground is a profusion of foliage
