SAINT BARTHOLOMEWSPANISH, FIFTEENTH CENTURY 14 SPANISH, FIFTEENTH CENTrR\ SAINT HARTllOLOMKW The most glowing colour In a Spanish picture seems to besubdued by an atmosphere, as though it were seen through aveil. This Is true of the St. Bartholomew. The painting presents a coordination of many influences syn-thetically expressed. Every detail has its purpose in the generalscheme. This is particularly noticeable in the sweep of St.Bartholomews cloak from the right hand down to the feet, andin the chain of gold attached to a wing of the demon which liesunder the foot of the saint at the bottom of the picture. Thewings and legs of the demon join the lines of rocks and landscapeand bring together successfully all objects in the composition. In addition to strength and graciousness a spirit of restraintpervades the panel. The colour, drawing, and pose of the figurehave majesty. A mantle richly brocaded with a design of pome-granates is worn by the saint; its folds are dexterously indicated
