Head H to 1\ times as long as broad; snout \\ to 2 timesdiameter of eye, which is \.\ to 5^ times in length of head and \\ to 2\times in interoibital width ; mouth extending to below anterior borderof eye, maxillary to below centre of eye; 5 large teeth in upper jaw,4 in lower; suborbital and opercular bones rather strongly striated.Gill-rakers very short, 10-12 on lower part of anterior arch. DorsalII 8-9, originating above ventral, at equal distance from end of snoutand from caudal, or a little nearer latter. Anal III 13-16, originatingat equal distance from base of ventral and from caudal. Pectoral as Pig. 142.

Hydrocyon goliath.Type (A. M. C). A. long as ventral, ; to f length of head. Caudal deeply forked, withpointed lobes. Caudal peduncle once and § as long as deep. Scales•54-58 9s^3, 3 between lateral line and scaly process at base of ventral.Olive-brown above, silvery white on the sides and beneath ; more orless distinct dark lines along the series of scales above lateral line ;these lines absent in the young; dorsal yellow or red; adipose finblack; caudal edged with blackish, lower lobe red.
