stippling, and its tail ends in a triple point.Round the rim of the interior eight plants or trees are faintly incised. On the exterior is an engraved design representing an Egyptian landscape :The water of the Nile is indicatedby waves, in which is a Nile-boat,with a man in it bending forwardto r. and plying a pole. In frontof him is a lotos-plant, andbeyond on r. a serpent rearing tor., confronting a seated dog;between them and behind thedog are lotos-plants, and threemore beyond. Next is a crocodileto 1. in the background, and inthe field five lotos-plants ; beyond,an ibis pecking the ground to1., and three lotos-flowers, alsoanother object. All the flowersseem to be the lotos, in differentstages of growth, or seen fromdifferent points of view. Plate VIII. Diam. 12-5 cm. Asia Minor, 1894.Very late style. Round the neck, two gilt bands of ornament, vandyke-pattem between rings of punctured dots, and wave-pattern between similar rings ;round the stem long acanthus-leaves with points between, also gilt. Round theshoulder, frieze of ox-skulls alternating with festoons, above which are four-petalledflowers. Round the body, a frieze of figures representing a sacrifice to Artemis :Woman to r., advancing 1. foot and holding out a lyre in r. hand ; her hair is knottedat the back, and she wears bracelets, and himation (gilt) round her lower limbs.
