In 875, driven by the Danes fromLindisfarne, the monks wandered over moor and fell in Southern Scotland andNorthern England, always bearing with them the body of the saint. Theyhalted at Craike, in Yorkshire, at Chester-le-Street and Ripon, and finally settled,in 995, on this lordly seat, then a jjrimaeval forest. Here, under a chapel of I ii! UUHHAM.) THE NINE ALTARS CUAVEL. 37 boughs, they laid the coffin, while Aldhune, the first Bishop at Durham, erectedthe first cathedral, of which not a trace remains. Carilef s cathedral originallyterminated in an apse, in the centre of which was Cuthberts shrine. This having become ruinous, the present NineAltars Chapel was commencedin 1242, so named from the ninebays of its eastern fagade, eachof which contained an altar. Thissing-ularly beautiful structure isthe only post-Norman portion ofthe cathedral, and is a specimenof the highest perfection of theEarly English
