Title |
Chape |
||
Description |
English: Medieval copper alloy dagger chape, probably dating to AD 1300-1550. Made of folded copper alloy sheet with a crenellated upper edge od triangular protrusions and with one perforation visible in the photos below this edge.
Similar chapes can be seen illustrated by Ward-Perkins (1940: 286, fig. 88), which he suggests date to the 14th and 15th centuries (ibid: 285-286). Examples have since been excavated in York (Ottaway & Rogers 2002: 2904) and London (Egan 2005: 193) which suggest they continued in use into the 16th century. |
