ll as other secret soci-ety lodges, are obtaining money from theirmembers under the misleading ideas intro-duced many years ago and found to be incor-rect. They-enact laws, promising to pay astipulated sum for a very small amount ofdues, and, while matters run very smoothlyfor a while, just in the time of the greatestneed, when sickness overtakes a number ofthe members, or when they arrive at such anage that there is greater probability of need-ing these benefits, the tribe or lodge finds it-self bankrupt. It is very, beautiful to promiseall these blessings, and the theory is veryfine, indeed, but the actual practice is, inmany cases, a fraud.—From a Red Menlodge report, in Buckeye Trail. Joined the Sunday school of the Mount Ver-non Congregational church in the sameyear and was admitted to membership ofthe church. Arrived in Chicago in 1856 and became sales-man in a shoe store. Joined the Plymouth Congregational churchin the same year and organized a Sundayschool class of his own. Rented an empty saloon building and re-moved his headquarters to the North Side. Founded the mission of North Market Hall and worked among the depraved youngmen of the North Market street gang. Founded Moodys Church in 1863 and be-came its lay pastor. Burned out by the great fire in 1S71. Met Ira D. Sankey in 1872 and became hisevangelistic partner. Went to Great Britain in 1873 and amazedthe country with his work. Founded the Northfield seminary for girlsin 1875. Founded the Mount Vernon school for boysin 1881. Established the Moody Bible Ins
