whomstudents may truly admire, imitate and sin-cerely love. College life may thus be acontinued home life, where all the sweetamenities of mutual affection may educatethe heart while the intellect is receiving itshighest and best culture. Students at Elmira enjoy Christian influ-ences and feel the home atmosphere. Theyfind the culture and refinement of theChristian home harmoniously blended withthe life of the scholar. The resources of this institution becameimpaired in consequence of investments ren-dered unproductive during the depression ofbusiness. For several years the friends ofthe college have known that the continuedprosperity of Elmira depended upon thesecuring of an endowment fund largeenough to place it on a firm financial basis.Earnest efforts to raise such a fund were notsuccessful while the business depression con-tinued. In April, 1897, the Rev. A. C. Mac-Kenzie, D.D., then pastor of the FirstPresbyterian Church in Owego, N. Y.,accepted the presidency of the college, to

Phi Mu Room. 110 ELMIRA COLLEGE. (August, succeed the Rev. Rufus S. Green, D.D.,who had resigned that office during theprevious year. The effort in behalf of anendowment was renewed, Dr. MacKenzieproposing that the citizens of Elmira, whohave always generously supported the insti-tution, be asked to raise $50,000, and thata like sum be secured if possible from friends outside the city. At the recentcommencement—June, 1898—he was ableto announce that the $100,000 had been fullypledged. cThe citizens of Elmira showedtheir appreciation of the institution by con-tributing three-fifths of the amount insteadof one-half. The result is largely due to theuntiring zeal of President MacKenzie.
