Cinderella got the biggest she couldfind, though she could not see how thiswould help her to go to the ball. The godmother struck the pumpkinwith her wand, and it was instantly turnedinto a fine coach, gilded all over with gold.Then she told Cinderella to bring her themouse trap, which had six live mice in it.Cinderella did as she was told, and hergodmother lifted up the trapdoor a little,and as the mice came out she tapped them 21 Cinderella ■ with her wand, and each mouse was atonce turned into a fine horse. So nowthere were six beautiful mouse-colored,dapple-gray horses and a magnificentcoach. And now for a coachman, said thefairy. Bring me the rat trap. Cinderella brought the trap, with thethree large rats in it. The biggest rat be-came a fat, jolly old coachman at thefairys bidding. Go again into the garden and you will 22

Cinderella had no sooner done so thanher godmother turned them into six foot-men, who jumped up behind the coach withtheir liveries of gold and silver. The fairythen touched Cinderella with her wand,and in an instant she was dressed in clothof gold and silver, all set with jewels, andon her feet were a pair of glass slippers.Then Cinderella got up into her coach,and the fairy commanded her not to stayone moment after midnight, for if she did *4 i n 1 1 a the coach would become a pumpkin again,her horses mice, her coachman a rat, herfootmen lizards, and her clothes just asthey were. She promised to do as she was told, andaway she drove to the ball. The kings son was told that a greatprincess whom nobody knew was drivingup to the palace, and he ran out to meether.
