The Indians gave a most tremendousshout, and all set to work with their tomahawksand axes. In ten or fifteen minutes the tree was escape, and was killed. The Indians at first amusedthemselves with allowing a Newfoundland dog toattack it, but it defended itself so well that Ithink it would have escaped from the dog but forthe interposition of the Indians.
