Notes | Drawn threadwork on piece of German paper sacking, made during WW1 by 43864 Gunner Godfrey Nassau (Guy) Le Clerk, NZ Field Artillery, while in Hornchurch Hospital recuperating from gas inhalation, circa 1918. The paper based sacking cloth was probably originally manufactured in Germany during the war years. The production of ersatz paper cloth was one means addressing shortages of cotton resulting from naval blockades and reduced access to some of Germany’s pre-war suppliers – America, Egypt, India. 43864 Gunner Godfrey Nassau Le Clerc, NZ Field Artillery, farmer of Parua Bay, North Auckland, left New Zealand with the 27th Reinforcements, NZFA on 12th June 1917. He was present at the 3rd Battle of Ypres and subsequently was hospitalised to recuperate from gas inhalation while in service. During this time he created this piece of drawn threadwork which he took back to New Zealand. After the war Godfrey met up with Alice Josephine (Jo) Briggs of Whangarei. At the time Jo was a staff member of the Whangarei County Council. She had previously been engaged to John Strachan Pearson, Auckland Mounted Rifles, who died of malaria in 1918. Godfrey and Jo had a prolonged period of courtship, not marrying until 1930. The couple lived initially at Okaihau, later moving down to Kaikohe, to Whangarei and then to Hamilton where they were living during WW2. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
