Title |
Cloth seal |
||
Description |
English: A lead cloth seal with only disc one surviving, circular in shape measuring c23mm in diameter. This cloth seal is very similar to an example from London (see Egan 1995, p40-41 and p170, fig 19, no 61).
Egan (1995, 40-41) explains that these legends are contracted and the legend had the meaning 'seal of alnage of salable cloths of London // for woollen cloths at London.' The contracted form of the legend as seen on this example appear on seals of this series dated 1564-1573. These seem to be the only English seals of any date to specify woollen cloths. They have been found widely in England as well as in London. |
