Description |
English: St Andrew Episcopal penny (Rochester) of Ecgberht of Wessex. The obverse is as North 1980 Vol I Plate VIII no 5, but the reverse, while bearing the SCS ANDREAS legend, has at the centre a six-armed rosette with wedge-form arms centred on a pellet. One interest in this discovery is that Freckenham was restored to Rochester as a possession by Archbishop Lanfranc, together with Falkenham and Stoke Denniton, as a place which had formerly belonged to them but which had been taken away during the Viking Wars. Although that Rochester link for Freckenham might only be tenth or early eleventh century, this coin (which may simply have reached it through circulation) needs to be viewed in that context. The starting terminus date of 825 is defined by Ecgberht's conquest of Kent in that year, ending Baldred's Kentish coinage. |
