Notes | "Masonic Collar and Badge of Major Marmaduke Nixon" Col. Marmaduke G Nixon migrated to New Zealand in 1852 and bought a farm at Tautauroa, , near Mangere. Before coming to New Zealand Noxon had served with the British military, and in New Zealand he offered his services to the government. In 1860 he was gazetted as a lieutenant colonel in the Auckland Militia and the Royal Volunteer Cavalry in 1860 and was responsible for guarding the line of communications and supply between Auckland and military outposts in South Auckland. He also raised flying columns against marauding war parties. He subsequently became commandant of the Colonial Defence Force Cavalry formed in May 1863, with two troops recruited from the Auckland district. The unit became known as "Nixon's Horse" and took part in the Waikato Campaign. Colonel Nixon was killed at Rangiaowhia, in February 1864 and was buried in the Grafton Cemetery, and a monument in his honour was erected at the junction of the Great South and Mangere roads. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
