E. provinces were invaded by apowerful confederation of Aryan and Tu-ranian tribes, Medes, Cimmerians, andArmenians, under the command ofCyaxares. The meager character of theinscriptions about this date, and the ap-parent number of claimants to the throne,indicate that after the death of Asshur- the Ottoman Turks from 1638, at whichperiod it was wrested from the Persians. People and Language.—The Assyriansbelonged to the northern branch of theSemitic family, a race of people whospread over the country and mingledwith or supplanted the original inhab-itants, while their language took theplace of the Akkadian, the latter becom-ing a dead language. Their languagediffered little from the Babylonian, andboth retained traces of the Akkadian.
