ne frequents thetemperate climates ; in winter it retires southward to thetropic regions. In Europe the bird goes as far north asSweden, Finland, and the middle of Siberia. It also visitsChina, Hindostan, Persia, Arabia, Egypt, and Africa ; andis found at the Cape of Good Hope. The distribution ofthe Crane is very partial in Europe; and in Great Britainit is one of the most rare occasional visitants ; whereas itis by no means an uncommon visitor in Poland, Prussia,central Russia, and some provinces of Sweden : in Hollandit is only seen during very cold winters, on its migration.Many individuals pass the winter in Turkey and Greece,although the greater number retire beyond the Mediterranean. The chosen locality of the Crane is flat country and low-lands during the breeding time ; and except during the timeof migration, which occurs twice a year, the Crane is onlyseen as a lonely bird, or at most with its mate ; but whenmigrating, these birds assemble in very large numbers, and PL 161 .

CRANE. 125 in the spring many thousands collect on the island of Rugen,awaiting favourable weather to cross the Baltic, which pas-sage they perform in one night. In autumn the same maybe observed on some islands in the Mediterranean, whenthe birds travel towards the south. Acccording to Mr.Drummond the Crane is very rare in Corfu, but occasionallyseen there in the spring. It is remarkable hoAV very punctually the Crane keeps toits time of autumnal migration, namely, within eight daysduring the month of October, being from the 12th till the20th of that month; and still more curious is the fact ofthis bird having been observed, for many years in succession,to travel or pass over a certain spot, within a thousand yardsright and left, without variation. The spot alluded to isa gentlemans house, near a village in Thuringia.
