f the throat, neck, sides, and breast; andthis salmon colour decreases in intensity as it descends, andfades off in the white of the belly. The flanks have a tingeof grey. The beak is black; the iris fire coloured ; andthe legs are between lake and carmine red. While finishing the history of the Passenger Pigeon, welearn that in the beginning of April, 1843, three birdsof this species were seen in the woods of Littleton Com-mon, in Middlesex. They appeared from their plumage PASSENGER PIGEON. 63 to be two of them males, and the other a female. Whenfirst seen they were flying at a great height; and comingdown they brushed over the copse wood and alighted onthe branch of a tree, where they were for some time dis-tinctly visible to two observers, who being well acquaintedwith this species, had leisure to observe their lengthened andelegant tails, and the peculiar colour of their plumage.When they took wing, their voices resembled that of thePheasant more than of the Piareon tribe. The Pheasant, although now a well-known bird all overEurope, was originally from the East, introduced through theluxury attendant upon civilization. It was brought first intothe south of Europe by way of Greece, and afterwards follow-ed the routes of the conquering Romans. The story goes,that the Argonauts met with these beautiful birds in greatnumbers along the banks of the river Phasis or Fasso, ontheir route to Colchis, from whence they fetched the goldenfleece; from this circumstance are derived its generic andtrivial names. The true habitat of the Pheasant is the warmer part ofAsia, from the borders of the Black Sea to China, andfrom Tartary to Persia and the East Indies. The beautiful plumage and the fine flavour of its fleshhave been the joint inducements for introducing the specieswherever it has been practicable.
