HenryPoyer enlisted in the Union army in 1861, becominga private in a Connecticut regiment, and served untilLees surrender, being with two Connecticut regi-ments, a Xew York regiment, and a Xew Jersey regiment. Though wounded three times he re- mained continuously in the service, and rose to therank of major, acting for one year as drilling officeron Blackwells Island, Xew York. His name is onthe monument in Central Park, New Britain. John B. Poyer was born in West Hartford July11, 1859. He spent his boyhood at West Hartfordand Xew Britain, and was a student in the grammarschool at Xew Britain at the age of fourteen yearswhen the change came in his fathers fortune. Fora time school books had to be laid aside to make wayfor hard work upon the farm for three or four years.Then, at the age of eighteen, he entered the privateschool of Prof. Camp, and spent some time prepar-atory to entrance examination for Yale College,
