Title
Complete tinned copper alloy spoon of Roman date, third or fourth century (AD 200 – AD 400).
Description
English: A complete but misshapen tinned copper alloy spoon of Roman date, third or fourth century (AD 200 – AD 400). Length 146.0mm, maximum width of bowl 30.6mm. Weight 16.54g

The bowl, which has a maximum depth of 6mm, is sub-oval in plan and has a length of 48mm and a width of 30.6mm. It is slightly pointed at the end and is bent to one side at an angle of about 45º from the alignment of the stem. There are striations in low relief that extend along the full length of the front and rear of the bowl. These features may reflect a manufacturing technique. The spoon has a characteristic off-set (or elbow) at the junction with the stem and the bowl. This feature is 2mm wide at the front and tapers to a sharp carination at the rear. An 18mm length of stem, where it joins the off-set, is 1.8mm thick and flat on both faces. Each face is decorated with six linear grooves of varying length. These grooves, combined with the shaped outline on the upper part of this section, may have been intended to represent an animal. The remaining part of the stem, which is 91mm in length, is sub-circular in cross-section and tapers gently towards the terminal, a rounded point. The stem is embellished with two twisted baluster mouldings flanked on either side by a narrow collar. Each baluster has five twists. The two mouldings are 43mm apart. The spoon is in fair condition and is tinned.
